Affirmations

Do you know?

Do you know that affirmations can change old limiting beliefs? Affirmations can assist you in taking back control of your wayward mind, which is constantly thinking. We inwardly judge, criticize, narrate, rehearse, rehash, etc. By living in our minds, we miss the beauty of the present moment, which is all there ever is.  We live in a past-future oriented world. However, the present moment is the only place where positive change can take place.  Affirmations re-train the mind to think in a more positive way, and are precursors for living in the now.

 What is an affirmation?

An affirmation is a positive statement made in the present tense, repeated often, to reduce old limiting beliefs.  Affirmations can be repeated out loud or inwardly, or written at least 10 times daily. Taking an affirmation into your meditation and repeating it over and over can be very powerful, cementing the new thought pattern into your subconscious mind.  When you catch yourself thinking, and our thinking is rarely positive, gently stop yourself and replace it with the affirmation you are currently working on.  Because many people live in their minds, and there is no judgment here...it just is…you may find yourself repeating an affirmation hundreds of times a day, however, this is far less than the time you would otherwise spend in the egoic mind. You will be pleasantly surprised at the shift it can make for you.

How do we use our mind?

Our minds are beautiful creations, and I surely do not want to imply that we not use our minds. Use your mind to access all your wonderful intelligence. It is our storehouse of knowledge. When we think incessantly, it is the ego at work, not your true self. If we stay present as often as possible (the use of affirmations will bridge you there), and take short visits to the mind to access or analyze information, we will begin to use our minds as they were intended.

The practice of affirming

Once you are comfortable working with affirmations, begin to think in affirmations. Turn a negative situation into a positive one, and begin to affirm it. An example of this might be:

You are annoyed at a co-worker for stealing an idea and presenting it as his/her own.  You might then affirm: “I am at peace with my co-workers and I accept what is.”

If you affirm this repeatedly and get into the flow of the words and let it expand in your heart, you will release the negative situation from your consciousness.  You will most likely find that the situation turns itself around, often in wonderful and surprising ways.

You may enjoy working with one or more affirmation(s) throughout the day. Do what works best for you. Remember to always repeat your affirmations with conviction, and really get into the feeling behind the words. Feel it in your heart, and it will be so.
